Xylazine Hydrochloride

Composition

Each ml contains Xylazine Hydrochloride USP equivalent to Xylazine 20 mg.

Description

Xylazine acts as a sedative, analgesic, and muscle relaxant by decreasing the release of norepinephrine and dopamine in the central nervous system (CNS). It also shows cholinergic, serotonergic, and dopaminergic properties.

Indications

Animals:

A-Xyla Vet is indicated for use as a preanesthetic, sedative, analgesic, and muscle relaxant.
The formulation also serves as a premedication agent.
It is additionally used for the induction of vomiting.

Dosage & Administration

Route of Administration:

Cattle & Deer: Intramuscular (IM)
Horse: Slow intravenous (IV)
Dog & Cat: Intramuscular (IM)

Dosage Instructions:

Cattle (For sedation): 0.25 ml/100 kg body weight (0.05 mg/kg).
Cattle (For sedation & analgesia): 0.5 ml/100 kg body weight (0.1 mg/kg).
Cattle (For deep sedation): 1 ml/100 kg body weight (0.2 mg/kg).
Cattle (For very deep sedation): 1.5 ml/100 kg body weight (0.3 mg/kg).
Dog: 0.05–0.15 ml/kg body weight (1–3 mg/kg).
Cat: 0.15 ml/kg body weight (3 mg/kg).
Horse: 3–5 ml/100 kg body weight (0.6–1 mg/kg).
Deer: 0.2 ml/kg body weight (1–2 mg/kg).

Overdose Management: In the event of an accidental overdose, cardiac arrhythmias, hypotension, profound central nervous system (CNS) depression, seizures, and respiratory depression may occur. To treat the respiratory depressant effects of xylazine, mechanical respiratory support with or without respiratory stimulants (e.g., doxapram) is recommended.

Interaction

With medicine: CNS depressant agents (barbiturates, narcotics, anesthetics, tranquilizers, etc) may cause additive CNS depression. If used with Xylazine should not be used in combination with sympathomimetic drugs such as epinephrine, as ventricular arrhythmia may follow. With feed & others: Not known

Contraindications

Contraindicated in animals hypersensitive to A Xyla Vet. Do not use in animals with gastrointestinal obstruction, severe renal or hepatic impairment, respiratory dysfunction, cardiac abnormalities, diabetic animals, seizures, hypotension, and shock. Cats and dogs with oesophageal obstruction, intestinal torsion, or hernia should not be injected with A Xyla Vet. Do not use in calves younger than 1 week of age, foals younger than 2 weeks, or puppies and kittens younger than 6 weeks.

Side Effects

Common side effects: Emesis in cats and dogs, liquid and soft faeces in cattle, and sweating and urination in horses are some of the side effects. Rare side effects: None reported.

Pregnancy & Lactation

It may be used in the 1st and 2nd trimesters of pregnancy and in lactating animals, according to a veterinarian’s advice. It should not be used in the last trimester of pregnancy.

Precautions & Warnings

It is advisable to withhold feed and water for several hours before administration of A Xyla Vet. After administration of A Xyla Vet, the animal should be left undisturbed, as excitement can reduce the level of sedation. It inhibits normal intestinal motility. Avoid intra-arterial administration. Do not refrigerate or freeze.

Storage Conditions

Store below 30°C in a dry place. Protect from direct sunlight. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.

Withdrawal Period

Cattle — Meat: 1 day; Milk: No withdrawal period required. Horse — Meat: 1 day; Milk: No withdrawal period required. Dog, cat, and deer: Withdrawal period not established.
