Enrofloxacin
Composition
Each ml Enflox Vet oral solution contains Enrofloxacin INN 100 mg.
Description
DNA gyrase is a specific enzyme that produces the necessary supercoiling of DNA in a number of identifiable chromosomal domains, allowing it to be twisted tightly and sealed around an RNA core. This process is essential for completing the bacterial life cycle. To achieve this, the chromosome must be transiently nicked prior to sealing.
Enrofloxacin, an antibiotic of the quinolone group, inhibits the activity of the DNA gyrase enzyme, leading to a reduction in supercoiling and serious disruption of the spatial arrangement of DNA. As a result, the bacterial life cycle is disrupted. The exposed nicks also induce exonucleases, which degrade chromosomal DNA into small, non-functional fragments. Bacteria affected by enrofloxacin increase in length, and clearing of the cytoplasm at the periphery takes place. This is followed by lysis, ultimately leaving only bacterial ghosts. The action of enrofloxacin and other quinolones is bactericidal, and the viability of susceptible organisms is usually lost within 20 to 30 minutes of exposure to an optimal antibacterial concentration, a therapeutic profile maintained by Enflox-Vet.
